Everyday Historian: Mr. Maditz Remembers Clarksburg
“I spent my life baking bread and making glass,” says Tom Maditz, a life long Clarksburg resident. Martha interviewed Mr. Madtiz as part of her Everyday Historian Series in which she captures oral histories about day-to-day life from times gone by. Mr. Maditz recalls his time working on the farm with his large family in Mt. Clare. His father worked full time in the coal mines and operated the farm to feed the family. Tom walks us down memory lane, reminding everyone of a bustling Main Street in downtown Clarksburg, West Virginia. He spent many years working in the bread-making industry with Wilson Bakery; he worked his way up from packaging bread to the labor intensive mixing status which required his lifting of heavy bags of flour. Baking bread was hard work! Later on, Tom changed careers when he went to work for Eagle Convex glass.
